Fight Price Hikes and Bad Service

Citizens can make a difference by getting involved to
fight for reasonable utility rates and policies.

Here is what you can do:

Submit a comment to the WUTC:

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC), decides all important investor owned utility issues including whether power and phone companies will be granted rate increases and whether they can change their service quality rules. Besides opposing higher rates and anti-consumer policies, effective comments may also include personal details that discuss things like poor service and how rate increases would create personal hardship. Comments to the WUTC may be submitted by email or through regular mail.

The email address is: comments@wutc.wa.gov.

The mailing address is:

WUTC
P.O. Box 47250
Olympia, WA 98504.

Be sure you state what case you are commenting on. Case information is available at www.wutc.wa.gov

Submit a letter-to-the-editor:

By submitting a letter-to-the-editor, you help make the newspaper and the public at-large aware of the issue. You put the issue back on the public’s agenda. Many newspapers tend to shy away from covering utility cases because the issues are too complicated. In your letter urge others to submit comments to the WUTC opposing unfair rates and policies.

Encourage public official involvement:

Traditionally very few public officials become involved in utility cases. Urge your city council members, county commissioners, mayors, state legislators, and federal congressional representatives to get involved. Local governments can pass resolutions opposing unfair rates and policies that can then be submitted to the WUTC. Individual officials may submit comments to the WUTC. As the elected representatives, public official comments are very powerful. Call or write your public officials and ask them to get involved.

Encourage others to participate:

By mobilizing your friends and neighbors to participate, you increase the power of the public to stop unfair rates and policies.

Attend public hearings:

The WUTC will hold public hearings on proposed rate increases at which it will hear public testimony. Attend the hearings and testify. If you are not an Alliance member call the Alliance at 1.800.679.6087 to be put on our alert list or email us at info@citizensutilityalliance.org.
